4th day: New York II

Our second day in New York we started in Lower Manhattan at the pier of the Staten Island Ferry. It is actually a commuter ferry operating  since 1905, 24hours 365 days a year, transporting around 28 million people a year. It is free of charge and passing really closeby to the Liberty island.

Probably everybody knows the history of the island and the Statue, which has been closed and opened several times since the attacks of 9/11.

After returning to Manhattan, we walked through the Battery park and Ground Zero to the Wall Street and touched the Bull of the Stock Exchange. The origin of the NYSE can be traced to May 17, 1792 and average trading value today is around 153 billion USD a year. Just an other interesting data, the location of the Exchange back that time was a room, rented for $200 a month, located at 40 Wall Street. Again here as on the Liberty island, there are extreme high safety meassures applied every time.

From here walking to the east we reached the harbour and another famous landmark the Brooklyn bridge. Completed in 1883, it connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. With a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m), it was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903. It is very nice that you can walk over the bridge one level above the traffic and enjoy views of Manhattan.

Walking from the bridge to north we arrived in the China town, with its typical houses with fire escapes restaurants and small shops. From here walking straight to north, you cross first Little Italy, you can pass by the famous Flatiron building, the first skyscraper of New York with the first operational elevator in NY. The building is originated from 1905 and is being 100m high.

Even more north, there is the Empire State Building, which was for a very long time the highest building of NY and actually at the time we were there it was again the tallest building, since the Twin Towers were not existing anymore. These days it is overtaken again by the One World Trade Center. We went there short before sunset, so we could enjoy the view both at light and night.
